Standard IV - Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility

A journey of

enlightenment...

Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices.

  • Advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.

  • Address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.

  • Promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information.

  • Develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using digital age communication and collaboration tools.

My Reflection

This standard requires promoting and modeling digital citizenship and responsibility. I feel the program at USM has opened my eyes to the local and societal issues and responsibilities of a digital society. Working in my small organization, most of these issues I was not aware of before. The above artifacts include:

(1) A course netiquette guide giving students of a course the expectations of digital citizenship which focuses on netiquette and proper communication online. This promotes digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information. This artifact also shows how I am taking responsibility for exhibiting and promoting legal and ethical behavior.

(2) A research paper discussing what multimedia is, the benefits of multimedia learning, critical issues, and some suggestions to ease the impact of these issues. This paper addresses a societal issue and my understanding of that issue. Also, some responsibilities for myself and others in an evolving digital culture. Addressing and outlining issues such as these can spread awareness and start the conversation of how to prevent these issues from stifling the growth of technology in education.

(3) A research paper discussing the adaptive and assistive devices available to educators. This shows one example of how I can address, and be an advocate for the needs of all learners providing them with equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.

My Future Learning Goal

My future learning goals include diving more into the cultural issues of using digital age communication and collaboration tools. This is so that I can have an understanding when engaging with colleagues or students of other cultures. My courses teach students from various cultural backgrounds, and I want to be aware of any issues and advocate for change if it needs to take place within my organization.
