Standard I - Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity

An achievement of

knowledge...

Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments.

  • Promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness.

  • Engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources.

  • Promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes.

  • Model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual environments.

My Reflection

This standard requires facilitating and inspiring student learning and creativity. I feel the best way the program at USM allowed me to demonstrate this, was exposing me to a wide range of digital tools. I was able to create and innovate using these tools to develop student learning materials and rich learning experiences. The artifacts above include:

(1) A Piktochart infographic teaching students a lesson. The development by myself, and use of the infographic by students promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness. I have never used infographics and feel it is a great way for students to learn information using a digital age tool. It also allows for an educator to be creative and add any elements they wish.

(2) A concept map showing relationships and concepts related to a root subject, in this case it's Cyberbullying. The concept map engages students in exploring real world issues and solving authentic problems using a digital tools.

(3) A learning blog/portfolio. This project promotes student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes. This body of work not only shows my reflection throughout a course, but also models collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with my fellow colleagues.

My Future Learning Goal

In the future, I would like to incorporate some of the creativity I have explored, in the courses I manage. I would like for the instructors and students I work with to experience innovation and creativity in their traditional and virtual classrooms. I would also like to learn and evaluate other learning management systems. My organization has lost its contract with BlackBoard, so I would like to explore the next LMS that will house all of our online courses and components of our traditional courses. Diving into the new LMS will hopefully assist in me being more innovative and creative with my courses using this new tool.
